The font name serif etymologically derives its name from the Old Dutch word, meaning dash or line. Meanwhile, sans is a French word that means without. So, if we combine them, what does sans serif font mean?

It is simply a font with no dashes on it. Or else, unlike its serif font counterparts, sans serif fonts do not have the little curves or dashes on the tails (stems) or at the end of each letter. This typeface is more likely to give a slightly more modern and futuristic look.
